Preparing for the edge: what it takes to be ready for the impossible

Preparing for an expedition isn’t just about physical fitness — it’s about mental readiness, strategic planning, and unwavering commitment. Every training session, from strength workouts to endurance treks, was designed to mimic the conditions I’d face in the wild. I trained outdoors in every kind of weather, pushed my limits, and learned to stay comfortable with discomfort. The goal wasn’t perfection — it was adaptability. Every ounce of effort before departure meant fewer doubts when the real challenges arrived.

Beyond the physical, I focused on building mental endurance. Visualization and mindfulness became key tools to manage fear, fatigue, and uncertainty. I imagined the moments I’d want to quit — and rehearsed my response until resilience became instinct. From gear selection to nutrition plans, every detail mattered. Preparation, I discovered, isn’t about control; it’s about trust — in your training, your mindset, and your ability to keep moving forward when things get tough.

Every expedition starts long before the first step is taken. For me, preparation wasn’t just about getting fit — it was about building a mindset strong enough to handle discomfort, isolation, and uncertainty.

Training the Body

Six months before departure, my days became a mix of strength, endurance, and cold-weather conditioning. Weighted hikes, long cycling sessions, and functional strength work built the physical resilience I’d need on the ice. I trained outdoors whenever possible — rain, wind, or frost — to simulate the real thing.

Training the Mind

Equally important was mental endurance. Meditation and visualization became daily habits. I imagined the moments I’d feel like quitting — and rehearsed how I’d respond. The expedition demanded not just muscles but clarity, calm, and grit.

Logistics & Planning

Packing was a science. Every gram mattered, every layer had a purpose. From nutrition to navigation, I built systems for every scenario. Preparation, I learned, is the difference between surviving and succeeding.

Takeaway: True preparation isn’t about perfection — it’s about adaptability. The goal isn’t to be ready for everything, but to stay ready for anything.
